Meet….Yarraka Bayles

 Yarraka Bayles was born in Sydney and raised in Redfern in the 80’s then later moved to Brisbane where she currently resides with her 3 children.

Yarraka is manager of BlackCard Cultural Tours, a new endeavour of The BlackCard Pty Ltd which is a 100% Aboriginal owned and operated business based in Brisbane, servicing Australia wide in the cultural education, training and tourism  space.

Who’s your mob?

Mums mob are Wonnarua and Bundjalung And Dads mob are Birri Gubba and Gungalu

What’s your favourite thing about your current job?

Working with 4 generations of our family, learning and sharing cultural knowledge from my elders to my children.

What’s the career highlight you’re most proud of?

Touring overseas and performing with my 3 children.

Why do you do what you do?

Because I have an obligation to pass on cultural knowledge for the greater good of humanity

If you could do anything, besides what you’re doing now, what would you do?


What do you want people to understand most about our culture?


We are blessed with the oldest culture in the world that has survived hundreds of years of invasion. Sovereignty was never ceded. We have been custodians of this country since time immemorial and have cultural obligations to continue to care for country to ensure future generations can thrive on their home lands.

What do you think the biggest misconception is about our culture?

That we are a dying race with very little culture left.

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?

Anywhere near the water where I can light a fire and connect to country.


Where’s the next place on your travel bucket list and why?

Uluru. Because it’s such a strong spiritual site and I’d love to meet the local traditional owners and learn as much as I can from them.

What are your hobbies?

Creating art, cooking, reading, writing, music

What could you give a 40-minute presentation on with no preparation?

Preparing a vegan family feast using native ingredients.
